Pavones is most famous for its ideal point break wave. Surfers come from all over the world to surf the longest left wave on Earth.
The laid-back atmosphere of Pavones gives an experience that only Costa Rica’s South Pacific can offer. The rain forest, beaches, birds, and animals of Pavones create a truly breathtaking ambiance. The surroundings exemplify traditional Costa Rican animal, plant, and exotic bird habitats. Most surfers end or begin their day at the famous Cantina surf bar, and from there, view other surfers riding the unbelievably long wave. A walk to the Cantina regularly reveals a picturesque view of wild horses, butterflies, flora, fauna, and flowers.
In Pavones, it is common to regularly see one or more of the four species of monkeys that reside there. Stay a few days, and you are likely to see a moving rainbow in the trees. This is the result of a rare, highly successful Scarlett Macaw breeding/release program. The rainbow colored birds live amongst the tucans, orchids, butterflies, fruits, and coconuts.
Activities such as snorkeling, scuba diving, horseback riding, and fishing allow non-surfer visitors plenty to do. Because Pavones is uniquely located directly on the gulf, it is the prime destination for fisherman. Experienced locals along the gulf area of Pavones & surrounding towns, love to tell stories about Jacques Cousteau and his travels to the area. The water clarity is best at the end of February, and stays spectacular through April. Both snorkeling and scuba diving are easily accessible by local beach pinnacles.
Sound too good to be true? Well, it’s not. Pavones is the quintessential surf, scuba, fishing, and natural paradise…with a unique “tranquilo” attitude.
